Sasha Solodukhina (@sardinenotsorry) is an artist, fabricator, and award-winning filmmaker with a strong pull towards fantastical world-building. Her work centers on inviting new imagination to become kin to lost personal and collective mythology.
In her sculptural work, she pushes against the conventional boundaries of the body to craft larger-than-life pieces, often out of unconventional materials, or sometimes, plainly put: trash. Her first solo art show, Illusions of Grandeur, opened at The Front in New Orleans in January 2025. Her wearable sculpture, Torpor, was included in Don Marshall’s Refreshing America, a show at the Contemporary Arts Center featuring the work of over 80 international artists living in New Orleans. Her fabrication work has appeared in campaigns for Frito-Lay (PepsiCo) and Fresh.
In her film projects, she creates surreal universes using texture, costume, and practical effects to subvert expectations and transport the audience into landscapes that are beautiful but fleeting. Her work has screened at HollyShorts, San Luis Obispo International Film Festival, Cleveland International Film Festival, and the Atlanta Film Festival, among others. Her music video for Tell Me a Story (Joanna Tomassoni) won Best Music Video at HollyShorts 2021, and “Best US Music Video” at SLO 2022. Her short Date Movie won the audience award for “Best Louisiana Short” at the New Orleans Film Festival in 2019. In 2024, she was selected as a finalist for South Pitch with her short, Violation. She is currently developing her first feature.
In all her work, she builds a language specific to each piece, creating systems of material in order to transcend and transform it.
Sasha’s interest in storytelling was born of a loss: the loss of personal history that comes with immigrating from a place whose collective memory is in dispute through oppression, omission, and revision. Born in Belarus, she often claims to be from Mars: an alien finding familiarity in the extraterrestrial, having to recollect her story through fragmented images, an incomplete chronology, and bodily memory. Her pull towards costuming is an inheritance, a thread picked up from her mother, who picked it up from her own mother, who, likely, picked it up from many more before that.
Sasha is a graduate of Wesleyan University and is based in New Orleans.
